PRODUCT STYLES:

• Fixed (Dummy) Door Knob:
  Description: This is a non-functional piece of hardware. It's essentially a "fake" knob or handle.
  Mechanism: It has no internal latching or turning mechanism. It does not operate a door latch.
  Purpose: Primarily used for aesthetic purposes or to provide a means to pull open a door that doesn't require latching, such as some closet doors (especially ball-catch or magnetic catch doors), inactive doors in a double door set, or pantry doors. It's surface-mounted.
• Paired Fixed Door Handles:
  Description: This refers to a set of two fixed (dummy) door handles or knobs.
  Mechanism: Like the single fixed version, neither knob/handle in the pair has any operational mechanism. They are both purely decorative or for pulling/pushing.
  Purpose: Often used on double doors where neither door actively latches using these handles (e.g., a set of inactive French doors or bi-fold closet doors where one knob/handle is mounted on each door panel).
• Passage Door Handles:
  Description: These are functional knobs or handles designed for doors that need to be opened and closed but do not require locking.
  Mechanism: They have a turning mechanism on both sides of the door. Turning the knob or lever on either side retracts the latch, allowing the door to open. There is no locking function built into the handle or knob itself.
  Purpose: Commonly used for interior doors that don't require privacy, such as hallway doors, closet doors (that latch), or utility room doors.
• Privacy Door Handles:
  Description: These are designed for doors that require locking from one side to ensure privacy.
  Mechanism: They feature a turning mechanism on both sides (like passage sets) but also include a locking mechanism on one side. This is typically a pin lock (a small push-button or turn-button on the interior knob/lever) or a thumbturn. When engaged, the lock prevents the exterior handle/knob from retracting the latch.
  Emergency Release: Most privacy sets have a small hole or slot on the exterior side that allows the door to be unlocked in an emergency using a generic tool or a specific emergency key.
  Purpose: Commonly used for bedroom doors, bathroom doors, or any interior room where privacy is desired.
• Important Note on Passage Options Becoming Privacy Options:
  As you correctly pointed out, a passage door handle or knob set can effectively be converted into a privacy optionthrough the separate installation of a locking mechanism. This is often done by adding:
  • A Thumbturn Mechanism: A separate deadbolt or latch operated by a thumbturn on the interior side can be installed above or below the passage handle/knob. This provides the locking function.
  • A Key Cylinder Mechanism: Similarly, a separate deadbolt or latch operated by a key on one or both sides (and often a thumbturn on the interior) can be installed in conjunction with the passage hardware.
  • In these scenarios, the passage handle/knob still operates the primary latch for opening and closing the door when unlocked, while the separately installed thumbturn or key cylinder provides the locking capability for privacy or security.

• Backset: The distance between the edge of the door and the center of the lock hole. Usually, the backset measures 2.375 inches or 2.75 inches.
• Cross (or edge) bore: The small hole along the edge of the door frame, usually measuring about 1-inch in diameter.
